Why not POW captchas? Brave search use it for filtering it's Leo chatbot requests. It works fine, both on an old thinkpad PC, or a mid-range smartphone.
Takes about half a dozen seconds to complete the challenge.

Captcha stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing Test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". PoW isn't a captcha.
