Some of them are basically african but it's a small minority. If you check genetic studies and eupedia Y-DNA haplogroups data on Italians, you can see 98% of them belong to indo-european (White) haplogroups including R1b, J2, G2a. The remaining 2% (non-white) is mostly in the South with haplogroups E1b1b (berber, 7% in the South) and haplogroup L (subsaharan, 1-2% in the South).
